| PLOT SYNOPSIS for Mayonaka no Yaji-san Kita-san (Yaji and Kita: The Midnight Pilgrims): DTS Special Edition [Regular Edition] |
 |
| This movie has several source materials. The original 'Toukaidouchuu Hizakurige' (1802-1822) by Juppensha Ikku was one of the bestsellers of the time. It tells the comical stories of two guys Yaji-san and Kita-san on the road. Kotobuki Shiriagari turned it into a bizarre manga titled 'Mayonaka no Yaji-san Kita-san' (roughly means 'Yaji-san and Kita-san in midnight'), which was later novelized by himself. He also wrote 'YajiKita in Deep' also featuring these two guys. Writer/director Kankurou Kudou turned them into his movie. - Set in Edo period (although you see some modern technologies in the movie), Yaji-san is a young merchant who is deeply in love with a drug-addicted actor Kita-san. Kita-san's condition is so serious that Yaji-san decides to take him to Ise Shrine, where anything can be possible. However, closer they come to Ise, more bizarre and chaotic their journey becomes. The boundary of reality and fantasy, past and present, life and death, seem to be fading away. |
