| PLOT SYNOPSIS for Zatoichi 1: Zatoichi Monogatari (The Tale of Zatoichi) |
 |
| [Zatoichi Collection] The 1st of 26 films featuring 'Zatoichi' (Zatou Ichi, Ichi the Zatou), aka 'Masseur Ichi', or 'The Blind Swordsman'. ('Zatou' is a low rank in the hierarchy of blind masseurs/musicians officially approved by the government in medieval Japan, who look like bonzes). Inspired by the very brief description in the short story by Kan Shimozawa, actor Shintarou Katsu created an unforgettable character on the screen. Although Katsu has 2 other successful series ('Akumyou' and 'Heitai Yakuza'), Ichi is without doubt the best role for what he has been, and will be, remembered. - Ichi is a blind masseur, gambler, and master swordsman with a sword hidden in his cane. In a village where 2 groups of yakuza are competeing, he meets a samurai named Hirate Miki, who has a problem with his lungs. They see something common in each other as handicapped men and develop friendship. But the yakuza war leads them to fight each other. |
