This is the place where you will find our official news, rants, hints and links for our existing and upcoming range of fine independent DVD productions.

While we are sure that most of you are familiar with our DVD-Retail Website – which by the way, celebrates its 10th year of existence in October 2006 – we felt that our now growing production side deserves more attention to itself.

There is no future without history: Tenebrae and Cannibal Ferox

Filed under: History and sazuma.com related — office @ 8:18 pm
Dario Argento’s giallo Tenebrae (1982) was our first ever DVD production dating back to the year 1998.It is now long sold out and numerous more DVDs of the same title have been released, but we still look back with satisfaction at our very first try.
In 1999 it was followed by Umberto Lenzi’s Cannibal Ferox (1981). We didn’t expect it would be half a decade before we would continue the series…

Re-introducing Cannibal Ferox in 2004: Ultrabit Edition

Filed under: Cannibal Ferox Ultrabit — office @ 8:18 pm

DVD technology advanced over the years, so we thought about what Cannibal Ferox should look like in 2004. The result was our Ultrabit Edition in a fine tin-packaging including 8 postcards of the rare German lobby cards in high-quality prints. The picture has been encoded in Ultrabit in the highest possible bitrate.

This set is limited to 3.333 pieces and is still available at our site.

And yes, we still ship it with the 333-pieces-limited collectible mousepad!

The quantity is limited and there is not much left so hurry up if it is not part of your collection yet.

Subconscious Cruelty: Deluxe Edition

Filed under: Subconscious Cruelty — office @ 8:21 pm

No truer words have ever been spoken about a movie: “A deep insight into the abysses of human act and feel, extremely powerful impressions full of obsessions, cruelty and sexuality.”

Like the movie itself, this production was an experience that was way harder to finish than intended in the beginning.

Italian Genre Cinema Collection launch with Morte Sospetta di una Minorenne

Filed under: Morte Sospetta di una Minorenne — office @ 8:22 pm

Almost a year has passed since our Subconscious Cruelty: Deluxe Edition has been released. But we weren’t lazy in the meantime. We came up with a concept for an entire batch of new titles which will be known as the “Italian Genre Cinema Collection“.

The first film in this series will be the rare and long sought-after 1975 Sergio Martino effort Morte Sospetta di una Minorenne aka Suspected Death of a Minor aka Too Young to Die – the perfect film to kick off a high-quality collection of Italian genre classics as it is a crossover of two of the most popular Italian genres from the 60s/70s, the giallo and the poliziesco.

As all future releases within the collection, Morte Sospetta will be transferred from its original negative into a great-looking 2.35:1 anamorphic DVD-master. Bonus features are still TBA, but we’re trying hard to come up with some interesting extras – not only for the first entry in the collection but all future titles as well.

Best possible quality will be our main objective for the collection. Apart from the perfection in specs and features, we put much thought in the packaging: Each title will arrive in a numbered digipak which will feature the same basic design (see screenshot for an unfinished layout screenshot of the back cover, incomplete with pictures from a different film and temp text) so that the entire collection will look real neat on your shelf. The only difference between the titles will be the original poster artwork on the front and the colored stripes, which are coming in a different shade for each genre: Gialli will be yellow (sure thing), a poliziesco is green, horror red, and erotic titles will be blue.

As this is only the collection’s first title, be sure to visit this space from time to time as all news regarding a specific title as well as the entire collection will be posted here.

Here are some first edition details:

  • 2.35:1, 16:9 Anamorphic Widescreen
  • English and Italian Language in Dolby Digital Mono
  • English, German and Dutch Subtitles
  • Bonus Features TBA

“Morte Sospetta di una Minorenne” release date change and feature update

Filed under: Morte Sospetta di una Minorenne — office @ 2:23 pm

Due to problems regarding the quality of the negatives we are forced to postpone the release date of the recently announced DVD of Sergio Martino’s Morte Sospetta di una Minorenne aka Suspected Death of a Minor.

Aside from restoring the negatives, we are forced to enhance the picture digitally and do some color corrections. During this time, we will try to locate more extra materials for the DVD. Please note that due to issues with the licensor, we cannot as initially announced, include the English audio track. The new, now definitive release date will be September the 10th of 2006.

There is also some good news, however: Director Sergio Martino will give us an interview on the 17th of June, which will be edited into a featurette for the DVD.

So here is the latest rundown of the features for the DVD:

  • 2.35:1, 16:9 Anamorphic Widescreen
  • Italian Language in Dolby Digital Mono
  • English, German and Dutch Subtitles
  • Audio Commentary by Film Critics Christian Kessler and Robert Zion
  • Featurette with Director Sergio Martino
  • Italian Trailer

“La Settima Donna” DVD release announcement

Filed under: La Settima Donna — office @ 2:31 pm

Following Morte Sospetta di una Minorenne as No. 2 in sazuma’s Italian Genre Cinema Collection, will be Franco Prosperi’s 1978 feature La Settima Donna aka The Last House on the Beach aka Verflucht zum Töten which will be
released on October, the 23rd of 2006.

Final specs and features are still TBA, but we were able to acquire the rights to the film’s original soundtrack which will be included as a separate audio-CD in the DVD package.

Latest “Morte Sospetta di una Minorenne” news

Filed under: Morte Sospetta di una Minorenne — office @ 11:54 am

Lots of Morte Sospetta news today.

The interview we had with Sergio Martino last Saturday went great. He was very nice and extremely talkative. This will make an interesting featurette.

The image restoration is almost finished as well. This took a lot of time, but the result is pretty stunning considering the shape of the negative. I think you all will be very happy with it – I know we are! Here’s a before/after comparison:

We also decided to add a small (very small) poster gallery to the DVD. There’s actually only two Italian posters (nobody seems to have any artwork for this rare title), but we figured we inlcude them anyway – for the sake of completeness.

We also completed the menus for the DVD. Here are some screenshots:
